About St Vincent de Paul Society

St Vincent de Paul Society (SVdP) is one of Australia’s most iconic faith based Not for Profit organisations. Founded in 1833 by individuals who wished to put their faith into action, the organisation is built on strong Christian values and plays a critical role in providing unwavering support for those who suffer deprivation, marginalisation, and inequality.

As a lay Catholic organisation, they aspire to live the gospel message by serving Christ in the poor with love, respect, justice, hope, and joy, and by working to shape a more just and compassionate society.

The Society in Australia is represented by more than 3000 employees and 60,000 members and plays a vital role in providing assistance to individuals and families experiencing hardship.

Their work encompasses a wide range of services, including emergency relief, affordable housing, food assistance, and support for refugees and migrants.

The society operates thrift stores, commonly known as Vinnies shops, where donated goods are sold to fund their charitable activities.

The organisation is guided by the principles of respect, compassion, justice, and collaboration. Volunteers and members actively engage with communities to offer practical assistance, a listening ear, and a helping hand to those in need.

The society's commitment to social justice extends beyond immediate relief, aiming to address the root causes of poverty and advocate for systemic change.

Overall, the St Vincent de Paul Society remains a beacon of hope, providing support, solidarity, and empowerment to individuals and families facing adversity.

Through their compassionate efforts, they contribute significantly to creating a more just and compassionate society.
