The role

As an Environmental Officer you will be part of a dynamic team and be responsible for undertaking assessments of routine petroleum, geothermal and/or pipeline proposals. In this role you will provide technical assessments and advice to the department’s executive, petroleum and energy sectors, the public, and industry organisations in relation to environmental legislation and policies. You will participate in divisional training programs, assist in preparing responses to ministerial and parliamentary questions, prepare written reports, documents and correspondence related to routine environmental assessments and make recommendations as required. You will contribute to maintaining divisional QMS business processes and participate in internal audits.

You will develop your compliance skills and carry out the duties of an Inspector, undertaking field work and participating in inspections and other compliance activities for petroleum, geothermal and pipeline operations, monitoring their compliance with approvals and legislative requirements.

This position is within the Petroleum Environment team, in the Petroleum and Energy Compliance Branch. We currently have one vacant full time permanent position at Specified Calling Level 1, however, additional opportunities may arise within 12 months.

While this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, it may also be used to fill other similar vacancies (permanent, fixed-term, full-time or part-time) within the department for the next 12 months, from the date that the recruitment breach period has been finalised.

To be eligible for appointment, applicants must have a valid working visa (for fixed term appointments) or be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or have a visa to live and work indefinitely in Australia (for permanent appointments) at the time of application.

For applicants that are currently unable to meet the visa eligibility criteria for permanent appointment (see above), we encourage you to apply if you would be interested in a fixed term contract.

    • A Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant discipline (marine, environmental science, natural sciences, or natural resource management), or an approved equivalent qualification.
    • Knowledge and/or experience in environmental management, including the assessment of environmental aspects and risks associated with petroleum, geothermal and/or pipeline proposals.
    • The ability to undertake research on environmental assessments and investigations and prepare relevant reports.
