Program overview

Yarra City Council supports volunteers and leaders of volunteers with skills development, awards and events, networking, grants, discounted venue hire and partnerships with other community organisations.

Volunteer involvement is a critical part of our society. It enhances civic life and helps build strong, inclusive, and resilient communities. Volunteer contributions are crucial to the success of many community projects, programs and events in the City of Yarra whilst providing benefits to the volunteers themselves.

In partnership with the Victorian Government, Yarra City Council is activating the former Commonwealth Bank in Victoria Street for a project known as the Learning Bank. The Learning Bank is a community space hosting programming that serves the North Richmond community and economy.

ROLE OBJECTIVE

Volunteers will work alongside Learning Bank staff to add value to the delivery of our community drop-in digital assistance program.

This program aims to assist residents in North Richmond and surrounds, especially people that live in public housing, many of which have different cultural backgrounds and speak English as a second language.

KEY TASKS

  • Assist Learning Bank staff to provide basic digital literacy skills. This may involve help with accessing websites, completing electronic forms, troubleshooting or showing people how to use digital devices so they can use it themselves;
  • Provide help through either drop-in sessions or one-one-one tutoring; and
  • Promote Learning Bank relevant services and events as appropriate.

TIME COMMITMENT

This volunteer role will commence in May 2024 and is required during school terms. The program does not run during school holidays.

  • Thursdays, 12pm – 3pm (3hrs) every week (flexible) at the Learning Bank (124 Victoria Street, Richmond).

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills.
  • Enjoy engaging with a wide variety of people with a diverse social and cultural backgrounds – this may include people with mobility and communication barriers.
  • Fluent functional English or intermediate to advanced proficiency in English language and literacy. We encourage people from language backgrounds other than English to volunteer.
  • Able to work in a team or autonomously as required.
  • Have basic technology skills - confident in using a variety of digital devices, including mobile phones, tablets and laptops. Learning Bank can provide digital devices for each session.
  • Have a current police check and Working with Children card.
  • Able to commit to a minimum of 6 months.

TRAINING & SUPPORT

All volunteers are required to attend a short induction session about the volunteer program and any training specific to your volunteering role to enable you to feel confident in undertaking the tasks.

Compulsory online training modules required for this role includes:

  • Volunteer induction (including code of conduct and health and safety)
  • Child safety

You will be provided with ongoing support from your Volunteer Supervisor with opportunities for feedback.
