POSITION PROFILE

Consultants in Emergency Medicine who are successful to this role will work at the WA Virtual Emergency Department (WAVED) which is in St John Ambulance WA Operations Centre – Belmont. Services will include the following:

  • Comprehensive clinical service in Emergency Medicine to patients of WA Virtual Emergency Department (WAVED).
  • Opportunity to promote quality health outcomes for emergency medicine.
  • Provides clinical expertise and leadership for WAVED services to internal and external customers.

ABOUT THE STATE HEALTH OPERATIONS CENTRE (SHOC)

The State Health Operations Centre (SHOC) aims to improve the coordination and efficiency of patient flow services, establishing new functions to manage the demand on emergency departments and ease system pressures. These functions include patient transport services; call taking; triage and dispatch (St John WA); virtual emergency care and establishing situational awareness of demand and pressure across health service providers and St John WA by ensuring collective system-wide access to data, analysis and predict analytics capability.

ABOUT THE WA VIRTUAL EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

The WA Virtual Emergency Department (WAVED) will give patients the option of being seen virtually in the comfort of their own home when safe and appropriate to do so, rather than waiting in an emergency department (ED). This partnership between the Department of Health, Health Service Providers (HSPs) and St John WA provides patients with clinically appropriate alternative care options and help reduce visits to the ED. This will help alleviate pressures on Western Australia’s hospitals and ensure that beds are available for those who most need them.

Older adults within residential aged care facilities in the Perth metropolitan area are one of the initial priorities for WAVED as they are at much greater risk of experiencing harm from a hospital visit, such as hospital acquired infections, falls, loss of muscle mass/function and delirium. Further targeted cohorts of patients will be included into the service over the next 18 months.

Many other states in Australia have successfully implemented virtual emergency care services, which have proven to be safe, effective and provide excellent patient experience.
