In this role, you'll:


Be responsible for providing a harbour cleaning and environmental maintenance service for public foreshores and waterways through the application of judgement and skills in operating equipment in adverse and changing on-water conditions to ensure that NSW Maritime’s environmental obligations are met in a customer focused manner and in-line with organisational policies and procedures. You will skipper a small vessel which assists in clearing waterways and will assist in the cleaning of beaches within Sydney Harbour.


The Maritime Environmental Services Officer contributes towards the following day to day responsibilities:


  • Undertake harbour cleaning, inspections and environmental maintenance activities using specialised cleaning equipment, maintain Harbour Cleaning depot grounds, booms and workshops to ensure activities are delivered in in a safe, timely, efficient and cost-effective manner
  • Conduct urgent/emergency activities to remove navigation/environmental hazards in a safe, timely, efficient and cost-effective manner
  • Prepare, navigate and operate the wide range of Maritime Environmental Services Vessels;
  • Cranes, plant and other required equipment ensuring efficient and safe operation, correct positioning at required locations as well as ensuring safety to personnel and the vessel including compliance with WH&S guidelines and safe working practices, the Collision Regulations and other marine legislation as required.

This role will require you to work weekends and public holidays throughout the year. Role is based from Rozelle and works in shift pattern. Shifts are 12 hours, and this is a 365 day operation.

About you


You will be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.


You are self-motivated with mechanical skills and aptitude including the ability to carry out basic maintenance of vessels, vehicles, plant and equipment for daily activities.


We are looking for a flexible candidate who is a good team player and who is not afraid to do a physical job. If you enjoy working in team and are competent in vessel manoeuvring and small boat handling across a range of on-water conditions and ensuring the safe operation of vessels we want to hear from you.


The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work as part of a supportive and dynamic team environment.


This is an exciting and rare opportunity to work in our prestige Sydney Harbour waters. You will require a Coxswain Certificate of Competency or greater


This is an Identified role as it involves the development and delivery of services and programs that impact or require liaison with Aboriginal people and/or communities.
