The Role and our Branch

The Labour Relations Branch is looking for a highly motivated advisor to be part of a team to provide advice, support and training to Principals and line managers regarding Award and Agreement interpretation and application, industrial relations relevant to key stakeholders.

In consultation with the Manager Labour Relations and Principal Labour Relations Advisors, you will contribute to the development, implementation and review of Labour Relations policy and procedures, develop responses to Ministerial correspondence and parliamentary questions, prepare reports and briefings on a range of industrial and compliance-based matters. You will also answer questions from Principals and line managers regarding conditions of employment and other employment related matters. The role is also responsible for the delivery of training to Principals and line managers. You will ideally be a problem solver who is able to find creative and pragmatic solutions to complex operational problems with limited guidance.

The Labour Relations Branch operates in a complex human resources and industrial environment. It is responsible for ensuring policies and practices in the Department are developed and consistently applied, improved employment conditions and workplace flexibility within legislative and economic constraints are in place; and strategic, operational, industrial and complaint management advice, advocacy and negotiation in relation to all central and regional offices and schools is provided. The Labour Relations Branch is also responsible for the Department’s interaction with unions including through the bargaining process and the management of consultative forums, including joint consultative committees.

Eligibility and Training Requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter.
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
