About the department:

The department is equipped with a full range of state-of-the-art imaging equipment including multi-slice CT, MRI and high-resolution ultrasound equipment. There is a wide range of interventional procedures performed, particularly in hepatobiliary and oncology intervention. The main department is located on Levels 1 and 2 of the Lance Townsend Building, Austin Hospital. The department medical staff comprises 20.5 EFT of Staff Radiologists (Diagnostic, Interventional and Neurointerventional Specialists) and 20 Radiology Registrars and 4 Fellows. The Austin Hospital department includes three MRI machines, two CTs, three Angiography suites, one Fluoroscopy suite and six Ultrasound units. The Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital department provides mostly outpatient services. It consists of two CT machines, Fluoroscopy, Mammography and five Ultrasound rooms.


About the role:


Oncology:

  • This fellowship position aims to provide a unique opportunity for the candidate to develop subspecialty skills in Oncological Imaging. This encompasses imaging skills in all facets of Oncology, including diagnosis, staging, imaging guided treatment planning, therapeutic monitoring, clinical trial and restaging, using a variety of imaging modalities, particularly in Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Positron Emission Tomography.
  • Austin Health, and its associated Olivia Newton John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre and Mercy Hospital, cover a wide range of tumour streams, including Neuro-oncology, Head and Neck, Breast, Lung, Hepatobiliary, Colorectal, Melanoma, Urology, Gynae-oncology and Haematological Malignancy. Austin Health also prides itself on its multidisciplinary approach to cancer care, with various tumour steam multidisciplinary meetings (MDM) encompassing all oncological sub specialists such as surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists and haematologists as well as other relevant subspecialists such as nuclear medicine physicians, pathologists, genetics and respiratory physicians. Given the vast scope of Oncology disciplines, this position can be tailor made to provide imaging expertise in areas of interest to the candidate. For example, a Thoracic and Pelvic Malignancy focused fellowship with dedicated involvement in the relevant imaging modalities, oncology meetings and tumour stream MDM.
  • Teaching of Registrars, resident staff and medical students will be required. Participation in research is strongly encouraged. Participation in both clinical audit and research is expected and required. Fellows will be rostered to various modalities, including to our outpatient facility at the Repatriation Hospital. There is an on-call and after hours requirement including two weeks of nights.

Cardiothoracic:

  • This fellowship position aims to provide a unique opportunity for the candidate to develop subspecialty skills in Cardiothoracic Imaging. This encompasses imaging skills in all facets of Cardiac and Thoracic imaging, including coronary artery disease, transcutaneous aortic valve implantation planning, infiltrative myocardial disease, cancers of the lung and mediastinum, and respiratory conditions including interstitial lung disease. Experience with predominantly Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging will be gained, with correlation to other modalities including Positron Emission Tomography, plain film, ultrasound, Echocardiography and Catheter Angiography.
  • The Cardiothoracic Radiology Fellowship will predominantly involve a majority of diagnostic imaging, with some interventional experience (e.g. CT guided lung biopsy) as part of clinical service. The Fellow will become experienced and competent in the interpretation and assessment of CT coronary angiography, CT TAVI planning, adult cardiac MRI, high resolution CT of the chest, and vascular assessment.
  • Austin Health has active Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery Units, and Interventional Cardiologists with a large number of patients presenting for evaluation, work-up and monitoring of cardiac and respiratory disease. The Cardiac and Thoracic Radiologists work very closely with cardiologists, respiratory physicians, cardiac surgeons and thoracic surgeons to ensure very high levels of care.
  • The successful Fellow is expected to run the weekly Respiratory and Thoracic Surgery meetings, and Lung Cancer multidisciplinary meetings. The Fellow will also be responsible for combined Cardiology-Radiology Educational Sessions and TAVI planning meetings on a monthly basis. There will also be opportunity to attend Echocardiography interesting case sessions if desired.
  • Participation in both clinical audit and research is expected and required. Teaching of Registrars, resident staff and medical students is expected. Rostering is modality based, with exposure to MR, CT, US and ED radiology, as well as sessions at the outpatient facility, the Repatriation General Hospital. All fellows will receive academic time. There is an on-call requirement, which includes 2 weeks of night duty.

  • Medical Registration in Australia
  • Have passed the Part II exam of the RANZCR or equivalent
