Description:

The Natural Resource Management Officer is responsible for the coordination and delivery of project activities and services to communities across the Torres Strait. Key aspects involve facilitating and delivering support, technical advice, information and materials to communities.
The key duties of the position include
Duties and responsibilities in this role
  • Mekem gardening - A series of educational workshops and practical demonstrations to provide horticultural training to Torres Strait communities to support local gardening, both contemporary and traditional.
  • School and community gardening - On ground support and technical advice to develop gardens and educational resources for schools and community groups.
  • Sustainable horticulture in the Torres Strait - Overall provision of technical advice and support to community, and engaging with various stakeholders and partners, on sustainable and local horticultural practices and sharing and promoting learnings for the benefit of the region.
  • Supporting regional vegetation management
  • Other activities consistent with the Land theme as identified in the Land and Sea Management Strategy for Torres Strait (2016-2036)
Tasks will be varied and may include:
1. Providing administration support to the Land Team including;
  • Applying and developing innovative problem solving to address complex logistical and asset management challenges.
  • Providing technical expertise in procurement, purchasing, management of assets and data, project reporting and acquittal requirements.
  • The provision of policy and administration support duties including drafting community permission correspondence, letters, briefs, reports, minutes of meetings.
  • Attendance of staff meetings and representing the project area or agency at meetings, conferences and seminars.
  • Understanding of APS legislative frameworks and policies, ensuring responsible APS procurement.
2. Delivering regional projects, workshops and field days by;
  • Applying processes to identify, plan and deliver projects to meet regional outcomes as outlined in the Regional Plan and LSMU Land and Sea Management Strategy these include.
  • Coordinating the management of project budget and drive of the delivery of the Sustainable Horticulture project.
  • Effectively communicating project activities, issues and opportunities to Environmental Management Programme Staff, Torres Strait Rangers and key stakeholders.
3. The delivery of Land Team regional projects, workshops, field days and operations by;
  • Recognising responsibility for tasks requiring strategic thinking and which demonstrate the ability to work independently in a dynamic work environment.
  • Supporting productive working relationships in collaboration with environmental management staff, Land Team and Torres Strait Ranger Supervisors to develop in land project plans and operation orders.
  • Coordinating of field logistical requirements operations as well as managing independently with limited supervision the regional groundwater monitoring project.
4. The development of communication products for the Land Team whilst also incorporating culturally appropriate understanding through;
  • Accurate communication, with appropriateness and influence with team members, clients and Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal people relating to project activities, issues and opportunities to stakeholders.
  • Delivery of correspondence and media release platforms including; community notices, presentations, internal newsletter, social media, local news articles, information and educational resources.
5. Forming and maintaining working partnerships as well as undertake duties relating to land and sea management and ranger project support as directed by the Project Manager (Land).
  • Work closely with the Project Manager (Land) in developing skills in accordance with the APSC Australian Work Level Standards in relation to the role and to acquire qualifications relevant to higher level role responsibilities.
  • Work across line areas within TSRA and other agencies to build stakeholder relationships and achieve shared programme outcomes.
  • Work closely with advisors and managers to identify, report and resolve project management issues.
