Volunteer - Community Barista

North Carlton Railway Neighbourhood House
Swan Hill Full-day Full-time

Description:

Connect with community while enhancing your coffee-making and customer-service skills!

ROLE OBJECTIVE

The Railway House Coffee Cart runs 2-3 mornings a week and is a great vehicle for facilitating community connections and engagement, promoting programs and services, as well as raising small funds for House projects. The Cart also serves as a training opportunity for local VCAL students (or other community volunteers) who may be interested in developing customer service and/or coffee-making skills.

On Wednesdays, the Coffee Cart accompanies our free Community Food Stall, complementing the free breads and pastries we receive for distribution from a local bakery. The volunteer role will enable people with means, to purchase coffee ahead (by donation) for others who may be experiencing financial and social difficulties.

KEY TASKS

  • Set up the Coffee Cart, mugs, stools etc upon arrival
  • Check/ensure there are adequate supplies of coffee, milk/s and sugar for the shift.
  • Set up our Chatty Café sign, table and 2 chairs in a convenient location close by.
  • Make and serve coffee to customers.
  • Be a friendly and welcoming face for the community, engaging people in conversation or sharing information about relevant Railway House programs or community services where appropriate.
  • Pack up at the end of the shift, returning monies raised to Railway House Manager, and reporting on supplies needed for the next shift.
  • The Community Barista will occasionally be asked to walk/ride/drive to the local IGA to purchase supplies, when convenient/appropriate.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • As part of the background screening checks, North Carlton Railway Neighbourhood House expects that all volunteers undertake Police Checks (and Working with Children checks where the role involves children) and will follow the policies and procedures outlined in the Child Safety Policy.
