About the Role


The successful applicant will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a school culture that promotes positive relationships between students and staff, while also engaging parents and the wider community in the educational work of the school. The Principal is responsible for being innovative and creative in the establishment of systems and structures to foster academic development and improvements in social and emotional development for students, as well as engaging a diverse school community in the educational programs of the school. They will possess a commitment to continuous school improvement and development of high-quality teaching and learning. The Principal will build networks with other schools, local agencies, and services in the community to benefit school programs. The successful applicant will be a culturally responsive leader who is committed to enhancing outcomes for all students and valuing culture and the local community.


Carnarvon School of the Air (SOTA) is based in Carnarvon and is one of 5 Schools of the Air in Western Australia. The Schools of the Air deliver a comprehensive education to families with children living in isolated communities. The Principal understands the unique challenges students face living remotely and are skilled in managing tailored programs to cater for individual learning needs.


The Principal supports the Department’s objectives for the public education and training of students in Western Australia. The role of the Principal is to lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community through the deployment of resources provided by the Department of Education and the school community.

Carnarvon is the regional centre for the Gascoyne and is positioned at the mouth of the Gascoyne River, 904 km north of Perth, between two World Heritage areas – Shark Bay to the south and the Ningaloo Reef which begins just north of the town site of Carnarvon.


The Shire of Carnarvon encompasses popular tourist locations, Gladstone beach (to the south), Blowholes, Quobba (including Red Bluff), Gnaraloo Station, Warroora Station and Coral Bay to the north. The town also acts as the gateway to the world’s largest Monolith Mt Augustus, and the Kennedy Range national park, located to the east of Carnarvon (within the Shire of Upper Gascoyne).

Subsequent Appointments


This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.


The Department applies a 4 day breach period to this selection process.
