About the Planning & Project Controls Pathway

A sample of the type of tasks you could expect to complete as a Planning & Project Controls Graduate include:

  • Understanding the methods, timing, sequencing and resources required to build a construction project.
  • The plan is developed and communicated in a number of forms usually as a Bar Chart Programme however more modern techniques are used such as BIM Digital Engineering (3D/4D) visualisations to enhance collaboration with all stakeholders.
  • Interface and liaison with other people working on other disciplines on the same project to help build, update and mitigate programmes.
  • Establish and monitor the mobilisation plan for the effective start up of a project
  • Completing some quantity take-offs
  • Providing input to the contract programme
  • Providing input to the resource loading of programmes to generate labour, plant and material/commodity forecasts
  • Reviews the risks & opportunities in the development of the programme
  • Reviewing tender documentation and providing input to the development of a Bid stage programme

Project Controls:

  • Understands the different types of contracts and documentation and how these impact Budget Strategy, Baseline Management, Progress Management and Reporting
  • Develop a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) to establish a project control structure for efficient project monitoring
  • Develop a Cost Breakdown Structure (CBS) to establish the interface between time and cost for performance monitoring
  • Provides input to the Programme to Build (PtB) and aligns this with the Budget to Build (BtB)
  • Implementing Production Control on projects by communicating daily work plans and productivity targets
  • Developing labour and commodity forecasts and tracking against performance
  • Managing labour productivity performance report
  • Developing standard reports for performance measurement
  • Completing comparisons of budget (earned vs actual) and utilise this for forecasting
  • Familiarisation with systems such as PRISM
