About us:

Founded in 2022, Junior Major is a young company with big ideas. Born out of a shared desire to see change, Junior Major is decidedly different. Our focus is on technical and design craft in interactive and immersive media. We work with clients and collaborators predominantly in the cultural sector.

We are a nimble team and assemble the right expertise and talent to each project. Passionate, sometimes perfectionist, practitioners who want to do the best work, with the best people.

Replacing “we should…” with “what if?” informs everything we do. We seek out projects that exercise creativity, and move beyond the expected into new dimensions of meaning-making. We have deep respect for technology’s ability to bring about moments of wonder.

We are equally comfortable creating personal, intimate moments as we are with grand, sweeping gestures. The one thing our work is not, is predictable.

About the role:

We are after an enthusiastic creative who is equally comfortable ideating and creatively steering a project as they are crafting on the tools. Ultimately a design generalist who is comfortable and interested in exploring all areas of visual design with a particular focus on digital mediums and installation work.

You’ll ideally have a background or interest in either graphic design, branding or 3D design. You’re a design nerd at heart, not ashamed of your pixel perfect attention to detail and love geeking out at opportunities to stretch yourself into new territories. You also get that the design process can be a messy one at times and open to failing fast, leaving your ego at the door and trying new design approaches and methodologies.

You’ll be mentored and work closely by our Creative Director and have opportunities to lead projects creatively, be a lead designer on a project, but also just play supporting roles if projects require deep specialisation. You’ll help out on pitch work generating ideas, 2D and 3D visualisations, designs etc

We would like to find someone to complement our current way of working, as well as help us to establish new processes as we expand.

We intend this role to grow as we take on bigger more complex projects. There is an opportunity for this role to shift as the company grows, and for the candidate to pick areas to specialise. At present, the role would however suit a generalist.

Studio Details

  • Our mission is to help cultural organisations create experiences from the future to inform today, and inspire tomorrow.
  • We are selective with the work and clients we take on. We predominantly service cultural organisations and don’t like to take anything on that doesn’t align with our values and expectations on quality.
  • Our team usually works four days with Friday designated as a slow day where many of us don’t work. The expectation is to deliver a comparable output in a 4 day week as a 5 day week through minimising layers of management and allowing greater autonomy.
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays we work from our office in Pyrmont. We are, however, at times tied to exhibition launches so there are periods of greater intensity.
  • We are currently a team of 7 and are supported by amazing contractors (approx. 5 at any one time), though we are hoping to grow our internal team in the coming year.

Responsibilities: Support our Creative Director on pitches and projects from end to end. This could include:

  • Research and concept ideation
  • 2D and 3D visualisations
  • Design support on pitch decks
  • Being the lead designer on a project
  • Preparing print ready files and liaising with suppliers
  • Collaborating with developers, animators and other specialists to bring your design to life
  • Presenting work to clients
  • Writing briefs for collaborators
  • On site commissioning for installations
  • Assist the company directors with business development in supporting proactive pitches, being involved in the response to tenders, meeting with clients
  • Assist with general studio profile and marketing; eg designing assets for a new website, social media etc

Qualities:

  • Passion for technology, the arts and working in the cultural sector
  • Strong understanding of digital and digital design
  • Understanding of and experience with physical installations, working with architects and builders is desirable
  • Comfortable with unknowns and enjoys working in new areas
  • Is a bit of a generalist - likes mucking in on a range of tasks and is happy to give something a go
  • Appreciates the support and experience of senior team members, but is confident forging ahead fairly autonomously

Hard skills:

  • Proficiency with design applications including photoshop, indesign, figma
  • Proficiency with 3D design and rendering software e.g. 3ds max or C4D
  • Creative coding or visual programming experience highly desirable e.g. TouchDesigner
  • Animation skills nice to have but not essential

Experience:

Minimum 3 years experience working in a digital production environment in a design capacity, working across multiple projects at once, working to deadlines and budgets, and delivering deadline-driven projects.
