Kalumburu Remote Community School (RCS) is seeking a dedicated, hard-working individual to fill the role of Deputy Principal: Primary.

The Deputy Principal provides leadership and support for students, staff and the administration team at Kalumburu RCS. Key aspects of the role include providing strong Primary curriculum leadership, maintaining students' social, emotional and academic wellbeing, and working with the community to develop and maintain genuine, productive relationships. A commitment to positive approaches and maintaining our positive staff culture is essential and a personal resilience will support your success in living in a very remote location.

The Ideal Candidate

In providing curriculum leadership, the Deputy Principal supports Primary teachers in planning and delivering engaging and relevant learning programs and collaborates with the administration team and teaching staff to review and further develop whole-school Literacy and Numeracy plans.

The successful applicant will have excellent knowledge of the Western Australian Curriculum K-6, a strong understanding of Explicit Instruction pedagogies, and ideally familiarity with the Kimberley Schools Project (KSP) and its practices.

The successful applicant should have a sound knowledge of Reporting to Parents (RTP), Special Education Needs (SEN) Planning and have the capability to manage whole school practices including coordinating NAPLAN, overseeing On Entry Assessment and knowledge of the Early Years Learning Framework.

The successful applicant will have the ability to work calmly and consistently to support student learning and behaviour in the Primary context and support the social and emotional wellbeing of students in Years K-6. While experience in leadership roles is highly regarded, aspirant leaders with strong Primary experience are also encouraged to apply.

Strong communication skills are required to work closely with external agencies such as the School Psychologist, the School of Special Educational Needs: Behaviour and Engagement (SSEN:BE) and other local support agencies. The successful applicant will build positive relationships with all students and stakeholders and maintain student wellbeing by developing a consistent approach to promoting regular attendance and positive behaviour. Knowledge of Positive Behaviour Supports (PBS), Stronger Smarter practices and the Zones of Regulation program would be highly regarded.

Ideally, our Deputy Principal will have the interpersonal skills to develop mutually respectful relationships with community members and organisations. To be successful in this role you will exhibit a passion for improving outcomes for Aboriginal students, have experience in engaging Aboriginal families and an excellent understanding of the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework. While experience working in remote communities is not essential, a willingness to develop positive relationships with all stakeholders in Kalumburu is vital to ensuring positive outcomes for students.

Our School

Kalumburu RCS runs a 0-3 KindiLink program, two Early Years classes, three composite Primary classes and two composite Secondary classes.

From 2019, our school has been part of the Kimberley Schools Project (KSP), a federally funded initiative established to strengthen teaching pedagogy and improve outcomes for Kimberley students. The four pillars of the project are targeted teaching, better early years learning and care, regular attendance, and increased student and community engagement. Kalumburu RCS receives support in the form of professional learning, coaching, and funding through its participation in the project.

Our staff at Kalumburu RCS are a positive, supportive team and we have strong external supports from KSP and SSEN:BE coaches. Community participation and involvement in the school is actively encouraged Each term a Stronger Smarter day celebrates Culture and achievement.

Kalumburu's Location

Kalumburu, meaning 'Path by the River' or 'River Crossing', is the most northerly Aboriginal Community in Western Australia and is situated on Kwini Country on the banks of the King Edward River. The nearest townships to Kalumburu are Kununurra (565km SE), Wyndham (560km SE) and Derby (650km W). Road access to the region is dependent on seasonal conditions and Kalumburu is often inaccessible by road for 4-6 months of the year. Alternative access is by air from Kununurra, and supplies are regularly delivered by sea.

The Community of Kalumburu currently numbers around 500 people and is serviced by the school, community clinic, community store including takeaway, and an administration office providing postal, banking and Centrelink services.

Kalumburu provides many opportunities for outdoor recreational activities including fishing, camping and 4-wheel driving.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  • Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
  • High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
  • Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
  • Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.
