This is a nine (9) month fixed term, full-time position commencing Term 2, 2024.

The role of the Aboriginal Student Support Officer at Duncraig Senior High School (SHS) is to assist in the coordination of the Student Support Program. You will be responsible in developing and introducing systems and intervention strategies for Aboriginal students, family members and staff. You will develop supportive links between Aboriginal students, the family and school and other agencies and establish a network of partnerships both in government and non-government agencies. In addition, you will actively participate in case management with relevant stakeholders to provide information and consultancy advise as required.

To be successful in this role, the ability to undertake research on current issues for young Aboriginal people and provide written reports would be advantageous. The successful applicant should assist school administration team in crisis management as well as assist Cultural Responsiveness targets, as outlined in the school's operational plan, by developing and implementing strategies.

Duncraig SHS is situated in the north-western suburbs on the coastal strip 18 kilometres from Perth. We cater for students from Year 7 to Year 12 and are a school of high standards where the care and progress of every child is our first priority. We continue to improve our resources and facilities through the support of our Board, our parent body and the Education Department.

Duncraig SHS is part of a thriving community where students have a voice and regularly return to continue their engagement. This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Sound oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with local organisations and services.
  • Skills and experience in working with individual or small groups of Aboriginal students experiencing difficulties.
  • Sound research, conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to identify problems and provide solutions.
  • Effective planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing prioritises within timelines.
