ABOUT CULTIVATING COMMUNITY
Cultivating Community is an accredited social enterprise and non-profit organisation. With 25 years' experience we manage community gardens in Metro Melbourne for the State Government. We offer a variety of fee for service activities that are related to food systems including cooking, baking, gardening, and food waste management. We deliver community based and co designed cooking clubs, meal services and food literacy projects. We have two social enterprise program areas 1) Hortus - a WISE organisation that offers food based and other garden design, build and maintenance services including pathways for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community and 2) High-Rise Community- a bakery creating culturally appropriate and ethical breads for retail and other supply from our community-based ovens and locations. We are active in schools managing and educating young people about the benefits of gardening and have a variety of collaborative gardens and rooftop farm where our urban growers produce fresh cultural foods for the supply back into our partners and our community programs. Our target beneficiary is communities living or active within Public Housing localities and CALD groups both in Metro and Regional Victoria.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Cooking and Baking Officer will work closely with the Learning and Education Supervisor and colleagues to deliver a series of baking activities that support the development of work experience skills for young people who are deaf and hard of hearing in a creative, systematic and inclusive manner as well as opportunities to support other community cooking and baking activities including the supply of baked items for community-based retail.
The role will have responsibility for supporting volunteers from a variety of backgrounds as well as managing day to day related administration for the Cooking and Baking Activities including food safety and other operational safety requirements and delivering a program co designed with participants, SMT and others. This program will build upon the experiences within the organisation of our direct employment model with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community within Horticulture that is already in operation.
LOCATION
You will need to meet onsite at any of our locations across inner Melbourne and elsewhere with the majority focus at either Richmond, Fitzroy or in Autumn 2024 our new Community Kitchen in Prahran.
This is not a hybrid role and working from home is not an option for this position.
MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and deliver weekly baking activities that are inclusive, welcoming, accessible for all with a focus on CALD communities and marginalised groups.
- Nurture and develop baking individual and group skills for all participants encouraging leadership, ownership, and knowledge around work experiences wherever possible.
- Support the codesign, evaluation, reporting and impact measurement requirements for this program and the High Rise Community Bakery alongside SMT and others.
- Manage required ordering, procurement and delivery of resources to offer effective program.
- Maintain effective relationships internally and externally.
- Work within a budget.
- Maintain safe environments to protect customers, team members and yourself in line with occupational health and safety legislation and Cultivating Community policy requirements.
- Carry out other tasks as required.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Desirable skills, qualifications or experiences in Community Development, Social Care or Health.
- Essential experience of hospitality-based or community-based cooking and baking.
- Desirable lived experience or knowledge of Auslan and/or other languages.
- Experience and skills in Microsoft 365, Air Table and other IT systems.
- Excellent communication skills – written and verbal.
- Alignment to Cultivating Community Values.
- Ability to maintain positive relationships internally and externally with strong emotional intelligence and growth mindset.
- Entrepreneurial spirit.
- Desirable lived experience of public or social housing.

- Police Check
- Minimum of two references
CONTRACT AND HOURS
- Fixed Term contract 6 months
- 15.2 hours per week starting early February 2024 (Monday and Tuesday preferred but flexible) - additional hours subject to project funding.
- SCHADS Award Classification 3 Pay Point 1 plus Super, Salary Packaging and Employer Assist Program with possibility to progress subject to skills.
