Did you become a lawyer because you want to make a difference? Is integrity one of your core values? Are you most fulfilled when you have a work life balance and are undertaking incredibly challenging, meaningful work for clients you are proud to work for/with?

If this is you, then you must act on this opportunity to work at the Corruption and Crime Commission

THE WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The Corruption and Crime Commission (the Commission) was established 20 years ago and is a leading anti-corruption and crime agency. The Commission's main functions include reducing the incidence of serious misconduct and corruption in the Western Australian Public Sector and disrupting organised crime by investigating and litigating unexplained wealth matters under the Criminal Property Confiscation Act 2000. The Commission also oversees how WA Police exercise extensive powers under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1981 and the Criminal Investigation (Covert Powers) Act 2012.

Central to the performance and achievement of the Commission's functions is the strength of the Commission's Legal Services Directorate. As part of this Directorate you will work with exceptional lawyers and paralegals who are motivated and passionate about their work, their team and their clients (who range from the Commissioner to the Chief Executive, Investigators, Assessors and other individual Commission Officers).

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Commission has recently expanded the exercise of its unexplained wealth functions. These functions give the Commission powers to identify and investigate any person who appears to have unexplained wealth or is enjoying the benefits of crime. Confiscation proceedings may result.

The Commission undertakes serious misconduct (corruption) investigations utilising a mix of traditional law enforcement powers and compulsory powers to acquire information.

The Commission is looking for motivated Senior Lawyers and Lawyers to join its legal team to undertake anti-corruption and confiscations work. Ideally you will be experienced in one or more of the following:

  • investigations and prosecutions
  • Commissions of inquiry
  • administrative law
  • civil litigation relevant to the exercise of powers and functions under the Criminal Property Confiscation Act 2000

The work is exciting, interesting, challenging and diverse. It offers many rewarding and valuable experiences - including the opportunity to appear as Counsel assisting the Commission; to appear in the Supreme Court as Counsel representing the Commission; to be intimately involved with skilled investigators on highly sensitive, topical investigations; to work with the full range of the Commission's coercive and investigative powers; to prepare reports for tabling in Parliament; and to work closely with the Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and Acting Commissioner.

The Commission offers a well-resourced workplace with genuine work life balance. You will be well supported, well trained and have access to flexible working hours.

This is an outstanding opportunity for Senior Lawyers and Lawyers who are looking for employment now within the next 12 months, to join a competitive pool to which current and future job opportunities will be offered.

If you are currently a permanent WA public service officer, a right of return to the WA public sector may apply (see attachment 'Right of return provision for public service officers' for further information).

The Commission requires applicants to be Australian citizens or be immediately eligible for citizenship, and appointment is conditional on satisfactory completion of a rigorous security clearance process.

The Commission will assess all aspects of the Capability and Leadership Framework during the selection process and is committed to the professional development of its team and facilitating a work-life balance for all employees.

The Commission is an equal opportunity employer and strongly encourages people with disability, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and persons from culturally diverse backgrounds to apply.
