About Us

The County Court of Victoria is established pursuant to the County Court Act 1958. It has original and appellate jurisdiction and is the principal trial court in the State of Victoria. The Court hears over 12,000 criminal, common law, and commercial cases each year. The County Court has unlimited monetary jurisdiction in common law and commercial matters. In its criminal jurisdiction, the Court hears all indictable offences except treason, murder, and related offences.

There are a total of 80 Judges of the Court and over 300 staff, including judicial support staff. The County Court regularly conducts circuit sittings at 12 circuit courts situated in major centres throughout regional Victoria.

The County Court is committed to continuous improvement in accordance with the International Framework for Court Excellence. The Court's vision is to be a leader in court excellence, delivering the highest standard of justice to the community and inspiring public confidence in the rule of law.

About the Role

This role is instrumental in supporting the County Court of Victoria's mission to deliver the highest standard of justice and uphold the rule of law, fostering public confidence. Reporting directly to the Manager of Law Reform and Policy, you will play a crucial role within the Court's Governance, People, Policy, and Communications Team. Stakeholders for this position include government and non-government agencies, the judiciary, court staff, and the public. By crafting detailed summaries, drafting influential submissions, and providing expert legal advice, your contributions will directly influence legislative reforms and the court's strategic directions, enhancing the Court's ability to administer justice effectively.

About You

You will be responsible for several core tasks that are vital to the operation and success of the County Court of Victoria utilising your expertise in legal matters and policy development, ensuring that every day is engaging and impactful in maintaining the integrity and efficacy of the Court's operations.

A tertiary qualification in law is mandatory for this position. Your legal education will provide the foundational knowledge required to undertake the responsibilities of this role effectively.

Experience in legal practice is not strictly required however is highly regarded, as is exposure to legal analysis, particularly in statutory interpretation and government decision-making processes, will stand you in good stead.
