About Us:

Bidgerdii Community Health Service is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community controlled primary health care service, operating in the Rockhampton and Central Queensland region for close to 30 years. The organisation is a bulk billing community-controlled health service, managed by a Board of Directors who oversee and manage the strategic directions of the service.

Bidgerdii provides comprehensive primary health and well-being services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in the Rockhampton and surrounding regions. Bidgerdii collaborates with health and well-being partner agencies to enable integrated continuity of care for the community and continue to work to contribute to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health policy and program reform in Queensland.

About the Role:

The Social & Emotional Well Being Program (SEWB) is a nationally funded program providing generalist counselling services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are experiencing issues and concerns that affect their everyday emotional wellbeing.

The SEWB Program undertakes individual supported case management to empower the client to feel healthier through counselling therapies that relate to specific cultural healing practices, as well as facilitating the Bringing Them Home (BTH) component of the SEWB Program. The program also conducts specific counselling to members of the Stolen Generation and their families to ensure that individuals who access BTH Counselling Services have access to family tracing and supported referral options to other agencies working in the area of Bringing Them Home, such as QLD Link-Up Services

About You:

You a compassionate, optimistic individual wanting to make a difference in peoples lives especially our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and also have the following:

  • Certificate IV or higher in any of the following disciplines counselling, psychology, social work, mental health or related area that fulfills the registration requirements for membership with professional associations such as: Australian Counselling Association (ACA), Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) or similar association.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the history and effects of the forcible removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and a comprehensive understanding of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues.
  • Effective communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Demonstrated counselling skills with experience and knowledge of social, emotional and mental health issues which may include culturally appropriate healing methods and trauma and grief counselling skills.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team and willingness to refer clients to other services when necessary.
  • Demonstrated inter-personal skills in adapting to demanding and changing environments and the flexibility to adjust to meet the workload.
  • Competence with computers, especially the use of word-processing and database software.
  • Willingness to abide by the policies and procedures of the organisation.

Practical Requirements:

  • Current C Class Drivers Licence (QLD) – essential
  • Immunisation requirements – It is a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against the following vaccine preventable diseases: measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, hepatitis B, hepatitis A and pertussis (whooping cough) during their employment
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certificate
  • Current Blue Card (Working with Children and young people)
  • Satisfactory Police Check
