About the Role

The Northcote Electorate Office is seeking a full-time Electorate Officer to join the small, dynamic and motivated team based out of High Street, Northcote. As a team, we are dedicated to improving the lives of people living in the Northcote Electorate and ensuring the area thrives into the future as part of a successful, equitable and sustainable Victoria.

Electorate Officers play an important role in providing services to the Victorian community. Reporting to the Member for Northcote, your work will require a high degree of trust and integrity.

This position is for a senior role, which includes assisting the Member for Northcote in the overall running of the office, strategic delivery of priority projects, and managing work plans and work allocation within the team.

You will interact daily with constituents, community organisations, government departments, Ministerial offices and other stakeholders. Key responsibilities may include:

  • General administration and office management
  • Constituent services
  • Media and stakeholder engagement
  • Parliamentary duties

Under Section 30 of the Parliamentary Administration Act 2005 Electorate Officers must not perform any party specific activities. Party specific activity means any activity for the dominant purpose of directing how a person should vote at an election, by promoting or opposing the election of any candidate at the election; or a registered political party; or an elected member.

About you

The role is suited to someone with experience working within an Electorate Office, or someone who has experience working in local, state or federal government sectors.

The successful applicant will demonstrate professionalism, have an established understanding of the issues relevant to the inner north and enjoy engaging meaningfully with the community as part of a motivated team.

Proficiency in Greek or Italian language is highly desirable to meet the needs of the local constituency.

The role of an Electorate Officer requires you to demonstrate:

  • Exceptional level organisational ability, particularly in determining priorities and work practices, and both supervising and performing a broad range of office support duties, often to tight and demanding deadlines.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with demonstrated ability to undertake complex research, and draft briefings, reports, submissions, speeches, newsletters, and complex correspondence.
  • High level commitment and ability to provide the highest level of client service in a challenging environment, providing sound advice and maintaining the strictest confidence on all issues.
  • High level of understanding and ability to provide advice and guidance on government and parliamentary processes.
  • In-depth knowledge of traditional and social media landscape; ability to anticipate impact of a rapidly changing external policy and political environment and provide strategic advice.
  • High level stakeholder engagement skills and proven ability to collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders from government and peak organisations to local community organisations and constituents.
  • Experiencing in leading and supervising a team, demonstrating sound coaching and mentoring skills and respect for the needs of others.
  • Behaviours consistent with Electorate Officer values and Code of Conduct, including the ability to display high levels of responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability, and respect in relationships with others and decision making.

Additional skills which are favoured include event management, photography, multimedia content production, graphic design, budgeting and finance skills and social media analytics.

Salary and Job Type

Electorate Officer salaries are set out in the Electorate Officers (Victoria) Single Enterprise Agreement 2021.

Grade 3: $93,562 per annum plus 11% employer superannuation.

This role is ongoing, full-time, with a six-month probationary period.

Pre-Employment Screening requirements

All appointments are subject to receipt of a satisfactory National Name (Police) Check and Working with Children Check. Successful candidates who do not currently hold a Working with Children Check will be required to obtain a check within 3 months of commencement of employment.
