The key duties of the position include
The Role
The role of Technical Specialist is within the MCPSPO Engineering function and is accountable under the direction of the MCPSPO Principal Engineer. Within the role, you will perform complex work within the MCPSPO integrated team, whilst assisting other Naval Shipbuilding and Sustainment Group (NSSG) System Program Offices and industry to meet capability requirements related to Platform & Auxiliary systems and products.
The successful candidate will have extensive technical experience in an Engineering discipline, preferably Mechanical Engineering, or a Maintenance related field, understand the Defence maritime domain and have well-developed analytical skills, including knowledge of Systems Engineering practices and principles.
The Technical Specialist role will draw upon knowledge of the platform and auxiliary (mechanical) field to apply focused subject matter knowledge in a relevant domain and function, ensuring technical compliance and integrity. Communicate and engage stakeholders, plan, lead, develop, integrate, manage and evaluate Defence capability to deliver a specific technical aspects. Investigate and expose risks, analyse and report on technical issues, requirements, and develop and implement recommendations and advice.
The successful candidate will:
  • Be accountable for exercising assigned technical authorities and any Navy Seaworthiness delegations.
  • Plan and deliver critical complex technical activities within a specialist field and provide advice working to agreed priorities and outcomes.
  • Apply specialist technical knowledge and experience to identify risks and uncertainties and take these into account in planning, decision making and priority setting.
  • Implement technical knowledge and processes within the platform and auxiliary (mechanical) field to develop advancements to established technical code of practices, techniques, methods and regulations.
  • Build and sustain positive relationships with team members, and actively participate in team work.
  • Tailor communication style and language to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assess technical packages including scoping, planning and reviewing of packages and provide recommendations for consideration.
  • Evaluate and ensure that the delivered capability meets requirements and legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks, and implement actions.
  • Evaluate technical activities to understand critical factors for success and engage in continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Ensure safety aspects of Defence capability are considered and incorporated into technical activities.
  • Manage workflows, resources, prepare work area and team plans detailing measurable milestones and expected outcomes.

About our Team
The Maritime Cross Platform Systems Program Office (MCPSPO) within Maritime Systems Division, is the lead agency for delivery of cross-class sustainment services and advice across the maritime environment. MCPSPO sustains and manages a range of complex military systems and supplies, through an extensive network of industry partners, domestic and off-shore.
Our operating environment is complex and challenging, and requires exceptional contract and relationship management skills. MCPSPO is comprised of three functions, including Commercial, Sustainment and Engineering cells. The teams work in a complex, fast paced environment as part of a diverse and inclusive Branch environment that encompasses a variety of knowledge, skills and experience within a supportive hierarchy.

Highly developed written communication skills will be required to review and prepare documentation. This is a desk based position involving computer use and working with others towards shared goals in a collaborative team environment.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
  • Sound knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence's mission and policy requirements.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and judgement in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures.
  • Accountability for accurate completion of work within timeframes, share own expertise with others and guide and mentor less experienced employees.
  • An excellent level of stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to identify, anticipate and respond to stakeholder's needs and expectations to achieve work unit and Defence outcomes.
  • Relationship management experience and an understanding of contract management principles.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to write clear and concise correspondence, briefs and reports.
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to quickly learn and understand the sustainment environment, and Integrated Logistics Systems (ILS) practices within the domain.
  • Ability to work independently with the opportunity for reasonable autonomy and accountability for the achievement of outcomes of their work.
