Title: International Communications Senior Director

Openings â 3 x International Communications Senior Directors, who will be responsible for either: 1) Neurology & Alzheimerâs disease, 2) Diabetes & Obesity or 3) Oncology.

Location: Global role, from any of Lillyâs major affiliates, including but not limited to: Europe, Japan, China, Australia & Brazil. Location is flexible given the right experience.

Working pattern: Remote with regular connection to local affiliate and domestic/international travel required.

Lilly is building a new International Communications team, focused on external communications to support reputation, business goals, therapeutic areas and medicines in our markets outside the USA. The new team includes three senior director communications roles, each primarily focused on one therapeutic area: Alzheimer's disease, Diabetes and Obesity, or Oncology. These roles will partner with our central communications teams in the USA and focus on delivering earned media and communications strategies focused on engaging key stakeholders, innovation readiness and reputation/issue management, and supporting capacity and capability building in communications across our international affiliates.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be a critical member of the International Communications team, working in close partnership with the therapy area leadership team and US/Global Corporate Affairs colleagues. They will report to the Associate Vice President for International Communications, with additional accountability to the therapy area leader for Lilly International.

The roles are focused on setting the international communications strategy for each therapy area, working as the subject matter expert to deliver integrated communications programmes and build capabilities in traditional and new media.Â

As a champion for Lilly International, successful candidates will be accountable for clearly articulating international and affiliate needs to inform our global communications planning and strategies; effectively partnering with the corporate affairs and marketing leadership and their teams to ensure full integration and to deliver a consistent Lilly presence and story in our international affiliates.

They will also be responsible for designing international-specific communications strategies that complement and build on global communications plans to drive innovation readiness and Lillyâs brand presence for their therapeutic area. This includes accountability for leading external communications including earned media, thought leadership, advocacy, partnership activations and campaigns across our international business and for enabling synchronised employee communications and engagement activities. Strategies should be scalable and measurable, include issue preparedness and focus on driving innovation readiness and Lillyâs brand presence across IBU.

As point contact for our International affiliates, these are communications leadership positions, responsible for partnering with affiliates to build capabilities and facilitate flawless local execution of campaigns as well as delivering hands on support and issue management expertise in line with strategic business needs.

Specific responsibilities include :

  • Develop communication campaigns for Lilly International that leverage global strategies to enhance Lillyâs brand presence with key stakeholders, enable flawless in-country execution and improve innovation readiness for future product launches.
  • Maximise earned media opportunities across International for data and regulatory milestones.
  • Serve as primary communications counsel for the therapeutic area in International and key internal business partners and represent IBU communications in Innovation Readiness workstreams.
  • Key liaison for communications between the US-based Communications/Corporate Affairs teams and International.
  • Drive International and affiliate capability development in communications, facilitating best practice sharing and continuous learning.
  • Ensure all activities and campaigns are delivered in compliance with Lilly policies and procedures and external regulations.
  • Horizon scanning on future opportunities, reputation, and issues management to ensure preparedness and manage possible negative issues in the media.
  • Internal stakeholder and project management.
  • Manage day-to-day work with our PR agencies, including onboarding and management best practices for affiliates.
  • Develop and edit key communications for media such as press releases, internal Q&As, videos and fact sheets.
  • Conduct and/or facilitate interviews with local, national, and international media outlets.
  • Miscellaneous support of communication projects, including writing, issues management and strategic thinking.

Basic Qualifications

  • Demonstrable senior experience of leading design and delivery of multi-country communications campaigns and media handling experience (e.g. in prior journalism, public relations, other communications roles, etc.)
  • Robust experience of managing traditional and social media, including press releases, reactive handling, and issue management; alongside media relations, including interacting with A-list media and serving as a spokesperson.Â
  • Bachelorâs degree in relevant discipline, for example, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or Literature.

Additional Skills/Preferences

  • Experience in the development and execution of strategic and creative communications plans, including digital and social media.
  • Proven issue management skills.
  • Successful experience working with cross-functional teams, including collaboration and consensus building.
  • Experience of working across countries and regions, with ability to adapt to cultural preferences.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate with business partners.
  • Experience of managing projects to time, outcomes and budget.
  • PR agency management experience.
  • Ability to flex between strategic thinking and detailed delivery based on circumstances and business needs.
  • Creative communications skills â written and verbal, as well as interpersonal.
  • Ability to understand the business need and use communication to drive the business forward.
  • Experience of working with new media technologies and ability to adapt to evolving technologies.

Additional Information

  • Working hours will require flexibility given the global nature of the role.
