BAE Systems also fills a leading role in the upkeep of many of Australia's frontline naval assets across Australia for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

Engineering expertise in Maritime Electrical/Combat Systems and Manufacturing Engineering is critical to BAE successfully delivering on our commitments to the Australian Government's ambition of Continuous Naval Shipbuilding.

An opportunity exists for an Electrical/Combat Systems Engineer to join BAE Systems Australia - Maritime - with aspirations for a career specialisation in Maritime Platform Systems within the production environment. This role will be located at the Osborne shipyard precinct, and will report to the Manufacturing Engineering Delivery Lead. The role is offered on a permanent and full time basis. Part time candidates will also be considered and are encouraged to apply.

This opportunity is open to applicants who possess a technical background in Maritime Engineering, Electrical, or Mechatronic Engineering. Applicants who possess either a diploma in engineering or higher degree will be considered. Experience in shipbuilding is considered favourably and in some circumstances could be considered in lieu of other qualifications.

The role is based in Adelaide but has opportunity for occasional domestic and/or international travel to the UK. The applicant must be willing and able to visit and work in ship machinery spaces accessed via hatches and ladders.

This opportunity will see you:

  • Work within the Electrical/Combat Systems Manufacturing Engineering team where you will learn and apply the fundamentals of ship systems to construction of naval ships under guidance from the Platform Delivery Lead.
  • Work with a wide range of stakeholders across the engineering value stream to develop artefacts that can ultimately be used by the workers on the production floor.
  • Develop process and installation instructions from the simplest to the most complex of items.
  • Become the subject matter expert for systems under your ownership with the aim of being the first point of contact for any issues that arise on the production floor.
  • See your equipment from delivery into the shipyard through installation onto the ship and supporting all the way through to handover to the commissioning department.
  • Receive training, both internal and external, and exposure to different experiences with the objective of developing subject matter expertise in ship's platform systems.
  • Engage with customers and stakeholders for designing, planning and execution of engineering activities and projects.

About you:

As an applicant for this opportunity, you will:

  • Have a demonstrable interest in Maritime Electrical/Combat Systems.
  • Understand the role of manufacturing engineering, also known as production engineering, in a shipyard.
  • Possess a diploma or bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering or other relevant discipline. Considerable and relevant shipbuilding experience will be considered in lieu of this.
  • Be highly motivated to achieve best results, working as a member of a team.
  • Possess a naturally analytical, evidence-based approach to problem solving.
  • Be curious and open minded, whilst maintaining a healthy scepticism in the absence of solid evidence.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop good relationships and collaborate effectively with stakeholders to achieve good business outcomes

We believe in hiring for potential so if this role resonates with you, but you don't meet all the required criteria, we would still love to hear from you!
