Indigenous Liaison Officer

The Department of the Senate invites applications for the role of Indigenous Liaison Officer.

The Indigenous Liaison Officer will support the work of the Committee Office by improving the way secretariats and committees engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, networks and organisations.

The Indigenous Liaison Officer will establish and maintain effective professional networks with a diverse range of stakeholders, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations. The Indigenous Liaison Officer will promote and facilitate culturally appropriate interactions and communication between Senate committees and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and provide advice on cultural protocols and matters affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. All tasks require the Indigenous Liaison Officer to exercise sound judgement, manage a range of stakeholder expectations, and navigate politically and culturally sensitive issues.

The key duties of the position include

1. Liaise with a diverse range of stakeholders and establish effective professional relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, networks and organisations.
2. Provide expert oral and written advice in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural protocols, practices and issues related to the work of committees.
3. Assist with the management of administrative tasks to support the participation of members of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in committee inquiries including public hearings.
4. Undertake research, analysis and reporting activities including to support the development of resources to guide and support engagement and interaction between Senate committees and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
5. Develop and maintain sound knowledge of Senate procedures and parliamentary law and practice, particularly as they relate to the work of committees.
