Our Mission & History:

Our mission at Derby Aboriginal Health Service (DAHS) is to deliver holistic primary health care services rooted in social justice principles of equity and access, tailored to meet the needs of Aboriginal communities while respecting their cultural values.

Established by Aboriginal people for Aboriginal people, DAHS empowers individuals, families, and communities in the prevention and management of ill-health while promoting overall well-being.

In early 1995, Winun Ngari Aboriginal Corporation initiated a comprehensive health planning exercise for Aboriginal communities in the Jayida Buru Ward of the Malarabah ATSIC Regional Council of the West Kimberley. This effort led to the development of the Jayida Buru Health Strategy, which highlighted the need for culturally appropriate health services tailored to the diverse needs of Aboriginal populations.

Recognizing the limitations of mainstream services and the absence of culturally appropriate options, the Strategy outlined the necessity for an Aboriginal Health Service. In response, the Derby Aboriginal Medical Service (DAMS) Committee was established in April 1997, with support from Winun Ngari Aboriginal Corporation.
