Koorana Education Support Centre (ESC) is seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistant - Special Needs for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2024 school year and up to the end of Term 1, 2025. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2024 school year, up to the end of Term 1, 2025.

Koorana ESC is currently seeking dedicated team members with exceptional interpersonal skills. We are committed to providing high-quality education to students with a range of diverse needs including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, sensory impairment, and challenging behaviours.

We are looking for extraordinary Education Assistants - Special Needs who are keen to join a passionate team who put the needs of students with disabilities first. As a team player who embraces hard work and collaboration you would ideally support the creation of required learning environments to encourage all our students to reach your potential.

Suitable applicants will, under teacher direction, assist in the development, implementation and assessment of specialised education programs. This includes the operation of digital technologies and implementation of individual student or small group programs or demonstrations. You will also provide feedback on education and therapy programs and participate in the evaluation process relating to the achievement of educational goals.

Suitable applicants should ideally be collaborative, organised, excellent communicators, efficient at documentation and become involved in our supportive, innovative and dynamic school, applicants may work across classrooms, so flexibility is highly desirable. You should be an active team member within the school promoting independence opportunities and effectively support staff teams to ensure students achieve their individual education program objectives. You will ideally assist with the general health and wellbeing of students, including but not limited to, Epilepsy and seizure management.

In addition to the above suitable applicants will ideally look beyond behaviour to the deeper reasons for the behaviour. High level knowledge in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), specifically Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display (PODD) and devices is highly regarded. The student is at the centre of all we do, we aim to work with therapists, families and caregivers to provide a balanced program which focuses on the whole child, meeting their academic, social and emotional needs. To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with special needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
  • Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
  • Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  • Knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to :

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.
