Be Healthy Project Officer

Location: Derby, Western Australia

Employment Type: Full Time (part time will be considered)

Remuneration: $65,327.60 - $81,659.50 per annum pro rata + superannuation + salary sacrifice

Aboriginal people from several Kimberley communities have requested support for implementing culturally secure lifestyle modification programs that foster internal motivation, enhance health knowledge, and modify health beliefs and risk perception. The ‘Be Healthy’ program involves practical nutrition education, discussion of chronic diseases, cooking, stress management and group physical activity.

The ‘Be Healthy’ Project will empower Aboriginal people to increase exercise levels, improve nutrition and reduce obesity. It combines the power of research to drive evidence-based positive behaviour change with the wisdom, knowledge and cultural strength of Aboriginal communities, integrated with the major Kimberley healthcare providers. Other project partners include the Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services, Rural Clinical School of WA, Djarindjin Aboriginal Corporation, Diabetes WA, and Stan Perron Charitable Foundation.

This Aboriginal identified position will assist the ‘Be Healthy’ Program team with assessing the delivery of the ‘Be Healthy’ Program, and outcomes for participants and also within the wider Derby Aboriginal community. This includes:

  • Keeping accurate, confidential records of participant information.
  • Entering participant information into the program database.
  • Assisting with evaluation including collecting participant and community feedback on the ‘Be Healthy’ Program.

About You

To be considered for the position, you must have:

  • Aboriginality is a genuine requirement for this position as defined under Section 50(d) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984
  • Good communication skills
  • High level of integrity in maintaining confidentiality
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Enthusiasm and willing to learn relevant skills.
  • Well-developed organisational skills
  • Current “C” Class motor vehicle driver’s license.
  • National Police Clearance.
  • Fully Covid-19 Vaccinated
  • Working with Children's Check

Ideally, in addition to the above, we are looking for someone who:

  • Demonstrated ability to encourage and foster the work of others
  • Previous experience in field work and/or the health industry or research
  • Qualifications or experience in health promotion delivery.
  • There will be a small amount of regional and intrastate travel required including off road and air travel in light aircraft.
  • An occasional requirement to work outside of office hours.
  • Occasional public events to attend to facilitate the position requirements (outside of office hours).

About the Organisation

Derby Aboriginal Health Service (DAHS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service (ACCHS) providing holistic primary health care services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Derby and surrounding communities. DAHS provide a wide range of innovative public health programs in addition to direct comprehensive primary health care services. It is required to comply with a number of Service Agreements with Commonwealth and State departments and agencies, and to operate with a number of government and private medical and health delivery organizations. The operating environment for ACCHS Australia-wide - has become increasingly complex and changeable in recent years and this is likely to continue.

About the Position

Operations Duties

The scope of this position will include, but is not limited to:

  • Contribute to monitoring and evaluating Program delivery.
  • Contribute to development and validation of a culturally appropriate brief self-efficacy scale that will assess capability for healthy behaviours.
  • Contribute to following-up Program participants to assess longer-term health and other relevant outcomes.
  • Contribute to interviews with Program participants and other Aboriginal community members.
  • Contribute to documenting any organisational changes relating to a preventive approach to healthcare provision and completion of health assessments.

General

  • Participate in staff meetings and professional development activities.
  • Actively support a productive team approach to Program delivery and evaluation.
  • Adhere to any relevant cultural and ethics requirements.

Develop and Maintain Linkages

  • Liaise and cooperate as required with other project and policy staff in DAHS.

Self-Management & Team Contribution

  • Contribute to process improvement and adhere to all DAHS Policies and Procedures.
  • Participate in Performance Review process.
  • Contribute to effective team performance.
  • Follow all safety procedures and contribute to a safe work environment.

Culturally Appropriate Ways of Working

  • Personally, demonstrate through consistent behaviour understanding of, respect for and compliance with culturally sensitive ways of working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, staff and communities.

Other

  • Participates in continuous quality improvement activities and applies quality improvement principles to all duties performed.
  • Attends workshops and training as required.
  • Attend and participate in Staff Development Days.
