Temporary Student Position

Are you currently studying Cert IV/ Diploma/ Bachelor in Civil Engineering or equivalent? This is an exciting and unique opportunity for a student to be mentored and supported, providing you with hands-on experience while you study to enhance your professional development.

This position is temporary and will extend for the duration of the study period, until the attainment of graduation/qualifications (1-4 years).

Hours of Work: 21 hours a week up to 35 hours per week

Salary: $39.94 to $44.77 per hour, plus superannuation

Appointed salary in this range will be based on skills, qualifications, and experience.

Hornsby Shire is located on Sydney's upper north shore, approximately 25 kilometres north of the CBD. About the role

The Engineering Assistant role presents a prime opportunity for driven individuals to cultivate practical skills, deepen their understanding, and foster professional growth within the Design and Construction section of Council. Council is committed to nurturing the development of its team members and will actively mentor, support, and provide hands-on experience to individuals pursuing further studies. This collaborative approach ensures that as you advance academically, you simultaneously gain invaluable real-world experience, enhancing both your academic journey and professional development.

There are 3 key sections in the Design and Construction Branch

  • Survey – The carrying out of engineering surveys and preparation of base plans. The setting out on site of design detail for construction
  • Design – All pre-construction activities including the preparation of designs to the appropriate standards, consulting with stakeholders, the preparation of estimates and finalising all documentation ready for construction
  • Construction – The construction of all Infrastructure and Major Projects Division Improvement Programmes and other projects from internal clients based on plans prepared by the Design team and consultants.

About you

We are seeking a pro-active, enthusiastic person who has sound project management skills and who is currently studying Cert IV/ Diploma in Civil Engineering or equivalent, or relevant Engineering Degree.

The ability to be self motivated is critical to the success of this role as is the ability to provide administrative and management support to the Construction Team Leader. The role requires the programming of contractors for the construction, reconstruction and restoration of concrete footpaths and driveways and competence in preparing tender documents, writing specifications, reports and administration of contracts.

Strong oral communication, presentation and interpersonal skills are essential. The person is expected to work in a business office environment and is also required to visit outdoor project and construction sites. In addition the person may be required to travel to other council premises or related business premises. The person may be required to work variable hours.
