Job description:

Handling detector dogs in varying operational environments to detect and prevent biosecurity risks to Tasmania. Undertake clearances of passengers, freight, mail and vehicles at border and post-border environments in Tasmania and assist in the safety and wellbeing of Detector Dogs.

Hours per fortnight

73.50 (minimum 58.80 hours, by negotiation).

Duties

Handling detector dogs in varying operational environments to detect and prevent biosecurity risks to Tasmania. Undertake clearances of passengers, freight, mail and vehicles at border and post-border environments in Tasmania and assist in the safety and wellbeing of Detector Dogs.

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this position is to satisfy a pre-employment check before taking up the appointment, promotion, or transfer. The following check is to be conducted:

  • Crimes of violence
  • Sex related offences
  • Serious drug offences
  • Crimes involving dishonesty
  • Serious traffic offences
  • Any other offences under the Biosecurity Act 2019 , or related legislation

Essential Requirements

  • Satisfactory security clearance as required by port authorities.
  • Current unrestricted motor vehicle driver’s licence.

Desirable Requirements

  • A Certificate III or Certificate IV qualification in companion animal services or dog handling and government investigations or statutory compliance relevant to the nature of the work to be undertaken, as provided by either a university, a vocational education organisation or a registered and accredited training provider.
