Description:

The Nutrition Education Assistant, EFNEP (Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program) / FNP (Family Nutrition Program) will work collaboratively with a team of Extension professionals and other agencies and organizations to provide direct teaching and other outreach with youth and adults in food and nutrition and nutrition-related subject matter. The position targets limited income adults and children from limited income households. The position is supervised by the NDSU Extension West District Director.

Office headquarters will be the Fort Berthold Extension office of NDSU Extension located in New Town, North Dakota. This a full-time position with the NDSU Extension, contingent on the availability of Federal funds to support the program.

Position Information:

This position includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:

  • Recruit and enroll limited resource families with young children into EFNEP classes.
  • Recruit SNAP recipients to FNP activities and follow-up on agency referrals.
  • Identify food and nutrition learning needs of program participants and coordinate educational experiences to meet those needs.
  • Teach lessons on nutrition, food safety, food preparation and related subject matter to groups of adults and/or youth from limited resource households.
  • Promote FNP and EFNEP with community agencies and maintain a positive relationship with these agencies.
  • Evaluate participants' progress.
  • Maintain and submit accurate records on a timely basis.
  • Cooperate with other Extension staff members in developing linkages with EFNEP and FNP to other Extension programs and government agencies
  • Encourage families to utilize assistance provided through community services and Federal food assistance programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Evidence of course work, professional development, or work experience related to the position responsibilities
  • Evidence of understanding families living on limited resources.
  • Two+ years of relevant work experience with American Indian/Alaska Native populations.
  • Knowledge of community-based programming and existing community services for the Three Affiliated Tribes
  • Demonstrated communication skills - oral, written, listening.
  • Evidence of experience in keeping accurate and complete records.
  • Demonstrated experience in organizing work and working independently.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Personal vehicle for regular use, valid driver's license and auto insurance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Related work experience in food and nutrition education.
  • Demonstrated work or volunteer experience with limited resource families.
  • Leadership and/or teaching experience.
  • Two+ years of relevant work experience with communitied of the Three Affiliated Tribes.
  • Experience in working with diverse individuals and environments.
