  • Opportunity to work in a strong research team of scientists to understand the plant-soil nexus to maximise soil organic carbon sequestration

  • Base Salary Level A $83,454 + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

The School of Life and Environmental Sciences (SOLES) is currently seeking a Research Associate to support the Soil Science Challenge Project entitled "A soil-plant nexus to maximise organic carbon sequestration in the soil".

The broad aim of the project is to understand the plant-soil nexus and the interactive roles of plant rhizodeposits and soil mineralogy in maximising soil carbon sequestration. The appointee will carry out a range of chemical analyses including of microbial biomass, biomarkers of necromass, and stable isotope composition. Analyses will involve a range of different instrumental platforms and as such it is expected the chosen candidate will have experience with one or more of: soil analyses, GC-MS, LC-MS.

The ultimate aim is to directly understand for the first time the combined and interactive roles of plants, microbes and mineralogy in OM stabilisation in the soil.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • work with a specialised research team, reporting to Professor Balwant Singh

  • carry out various laboratory experiments, analyse experimental data and prepare manuscripts and reports for peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations

  • provide mentoring and guidance to students when required.

About you

  • an honours degree in soil science, ecology, microbiology or a related field with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the earlier mentioned duties and responsibilities

  • demonstrated experience in the analysis of plant metabolites

  • experience with gas chromatology - mass spectrometry analysis techniques are highly desirable

  • ability to effectively work independently and collaboratively with a research team.
