Southern River College is seeking a dynamic Head of Learning Area (HOLA) Health and Physical Education with the skills and knowledge to drive improvement, create change and bring transformation to this Learning Area.

The successful applicant will ideally have excellent interpersonal skills and be committed to promoting and fostering student engagement and academic achievement in a supportive environment where success is celebrated. They should be student and relationship focused, highly motivated, innovative and able to work effectively in a team environment, as well as displaying an engaging and energetic teaching style. You should reflect and assess the effectiveness of your teaching practice using a variety of methods available, promote an environment of active and positive learning, and provide educational opportunities and activities which enable students to achieve their highest potential.

They should display exemplary teaching and learning practices, and the ability to lead a learning culture that strengthens the capacity of their team. Adopting inclusive practices, building positive relationships with students, staff and the community are important components to this role. The HOLA -Health & Physical Education should be able to mentor, monitor and use coaching practices to build staff capacity and foster innovative practices and have the skills to conduct clear conversations when necessary.

The successful applicant will support staff in their development both individually and as a team, also holding them accountable for day-to-day work, and for the implementation of the plan and achievement of the Learning Area's goals. The successful applicant should be able to manage their resilience and have the skills to conduct clear and direct conversations as appropriate.

The successful applicant should have a growth mindset and be committed to the school's priorities and the growth of our sports specialist programs - Volleyball, Netball and Soccer. A deep knowledge of the Year 7 to 12 curriculum including compliance, assessment and reporting practices. It would be desirable if the successful applicant had qualifications and experience in Outdoor Education, Cert IV training and assessing (or Sport and Recreation). While these are desirable, not having these qualifications or experience is not a barrier to being successful in this position.

The HOLA should be a data driven leader of data gathering and analysis skills to monitor the individual and collective progress of students in each class in the Learning Area, and to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching practice and team performance.

You should utilise innovative initiatives and be able to work effectively and develop your dynamic team. This will involve you reflecting and assessing the effectiveness of teaching practice and cultivating a safe learning environment. You should utilise evidence based teaching practices whilst employing a range of assessment and reporting methods. With effective interpersonal skills, you will work closely with students, teachers and the community to instil rigour, resilience and pride, allowing students to achieve to their full potential.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  • Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
  • High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
  • Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs);
  • Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.
