Your part-time role

If you're looking for more challenge and excitement in your life, this rewarding part-time medical role in the Air Force could be for you.

As a part-time Ophthalmologist in the Air Force, you’re responsible for supplying specialist medical support to Air Force members.

You’ll work with Pilots and Air Force aviators and your specialist advice will be called upon in assisting Air Force doctors and other health professionals.

Your skills will be put to the test as you show both initiative and flexibility as you adapt to the dynamics of remote localities, new conditions and other challenges.

Many of your medical duties will be familiar, but your workplace could range from a well-resourced hospital, to an operational base providing aid in a combat zone, or the scene of a natural disaster.

You’ll have the opportunity to broaden your skills through a range of courses, including Health Operational Convention, Operational Health support, and Deployed Surgical Trauma. You’ll also complete collective training with other members of your unit.

If you have a specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia, are currently working and performing surgery in a public or private hospital, and are current in managing ocular trauma, particularly with head and neck trauma, this is your opportunity to embark on a fulfilling part-time career in the Air Force.

Salary

The pay you receive in the Air Force Reserve goes straight into your pocket with no deductions for tax, and it increases as you gain seniority and experience.

You’ll earn a good salary from day one. Upon appointment, you could earn a tax-free daily rate of $762 per day.

Commitment

  • Serve between 20 and 100 days each year (at least 50 days preferred)
  • Fit service around your existing work and family commitments

The Air Force provides special resources to help you approach your employer about your ambition to serve as a Reservist.

Training

  • You’ll be required to complete a Specialist Reserve Officer Familiarisation course at RAAF Base East Sale, VIC, within two years of appointment.
  • You’ll also complete a 5 day Operational Health Support Course at RAAF Base Amberley and a 3.5day online Health Officer Induction Course.
  • Ophthalmologist’s trainees will also be required to undertake the Specialist Reserve Officer Induction Course and may be eligible for selection to undertake the Aeromedical Evacuation, Operational Health Support and other specialty related courses.

Location

Upon completion of your training, you will be posted to either a Joint Health or Air Force Health Services Wing Unit for duty across Australia.

For this role, you must be an Australian citizen, over 17 at the time of enlistment and have specialist registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia, You must have no restrictions to practice that would prevent work in a Defence environment, and be a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists or equivalent.

You must also be able to obtain a security clearance and meet the minimum medical and fitness requirements. More information is available here.
