Sheep Hands looking for career progression or Sheep Overseer/Managers looking for their next position are invited to apply for a fulltime position in a welcoming family-owned enterprise at South Stirling in Southern Western Australia. The farm carries a merino breeding herd for wool and lamb, backgrounds and finishes cross-bred lamb in a feedlot.

Starting now and reporting to the owner, the Sheep Hand is involved in all day-to-day aspects of cross-bred lamb production including breeding, backgrounding, stock movements, sheep husbandry (health and yard work), feeding silage, routine weighing, out loading, and general feedlot maintenance in a strong team working environment. Additionally, Sheep Overseer/Managers will also supervise the livestock team and be involved in planning, reporting, procurement, trading, and marketing.

The position is best suited to a dedicated sheep worker with sheep husbandry knowledge and practical experience who enjoys team working and demonstrates attention to detail in their work. You can bring your own sheep dogs and both Sheep Hands who would like to increase their responsibilities towards management and current Sheep Overseer/Managers are encouraged to apply.

A generous hourly rate is on offer and the farm invests in you by supporting your attendance at training courses of your choice. The position comes with air-conditioned accommodation with primary and high school bus at the gate and access to a work utility. Domestic pets welcome. South Stirling enjoys warmer winters and milder summers than other parts of Western Australia due to its coastal location and is less than an hour’s drive to major regional centre Albany. Applicants should note this position may be subject to drug & alcohol testing.

DUTIES
  • Sheep paddock, backgrounding, and feedlot work
  • Sheep feeding, health and yard work
  • Basic feedlot and fence maintenance
  • Occasional weekend work
SKILLS & QUALITIES
  • Genuine passion for sheep work
  • Willing to develop skills and knowledge
  • Sheep husbandry knowledge & experience
  • Previous cross-bred merino experience with feedlotting preferred
  • Own sheep dogs advantageous
  • Basic Ag machinery operating skills
  • Basic mechanical, workshop & fencing skills preferred
  • Strong teamworking & effective communication
  • Upstanding with physical work ability
  • Manual Driver’s licence with truck licence handy
