Description:

BMCC Animal Care Facility is dedicated to the protection and welfare of animals. We
strive to provide a safe and caring environment for abandoned, neglected, lost and
surrendered animals, with the goal of finding them permanent, happy homes.

The Animal Care Facility coordinator is responsible for the day to day operation and
management of the facility.


RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to (Position Title): Principal Environment Ranger

Report to (Position Number): P01148

Staff Responsibility: 4-6 Animal Shelter Attendants, plus a volunteer
roster

Key Internal Relationships: BMCC employees, Rangers, Program Leaders &
Directors. Finance, The Mayor, BMCC
Councilors, WHS, marketing & communications
and other departments

Key External Relationships: Members of the wider community, local
veterinarians, suppliers, other Animal Control
Facilities, NSW RSPCA,
Contractors/Consultants, Community Groups &
Volunteers


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Animal Shelter Coordinator is critical for the effective leadership of a team of
Animal Shelter Attendants & volunteers to ensure the Animal Care Facility is
adequately staffed & maintained to meet the needs of the animals in care, and the
responsibility to the community is met. You will performance manage & support your
team & volunteers to deliver effective and efficient animal management controls for


the BMCC, with an emphasis on reuniting companion animals to their owners,
rehousing & boarding animals

You will lead the delivery of improvement initiatives, ensuring that compliance
obligations are met, contribute operational insight to policy development, and support
staff through training and mentoring opportunities.

You will oversee the daily care and well-being of companion animals on-site,
including providing support for general husbandry, cleaning and feeding; supporting
veterinary and health care programs; implementing socialisation, behaviour
assessment, enrichment and training programs; coordinating stock and food
supplies; reducing waste, general maintenance on kennels and buildings, ensuring
accurate record keeping and data management; and supporting our animal welfare
program. Property inspections for prospective adoption customers maybe required.

Assist the team with customer service enquiries, administration and maintenance or
the facility. Coordinate the on-boarding, training, and safety of volunteers.

You will promote awareness & provide advise on responsible pet ownership to the
broader community and undertake community needs assessments by use of
surveys, benchmarking, focus groups, public meetings, training workshops & other
resources.

Your will manage donation management & collection of fees and charges, as well as
manage budgets and expenditure at the facility, and raise revenue to ensure on-
going viability, through various streams including impounding services and overflow
facilities from other councils.

Workplace Health & Safety

Ensure compliance with WHS obligations and responsibilities as outlined in Councils
policies and procedures and under the relevant WHS legislation. These include but


are not limited to: identifying potentially unsafe situations or work practices and
notifying your Supervisor or Manager (or the Health, Safety Manager/Area Safety
Representative); never performing a task that you believe is dangerous or for which
you do not have the experience, or have not received appropriate instructions and
training or where the correct equipment to carry out the task safely is not available;
always work in a safe manner and in accordance with safety instructions, where
applicable; use the work equipment supplied for the job, in accordance with the
manufacturer's instructions), and any personal protective equipment, which the
Council deems necessary and has provided; be safety aware and report any actions
to your line manager which will assist the Council to meet its legal workplace health
and safety obligations.

You have the right to cease or direct cessation of unsafe work. In addition, you are
required at all times to comply with Councils Asbestos Management Plan and Policy.

Compliance & Risk

Manage work practices to mitigate all identified risks specific to Animal Control.
Identify and report additional risks & threats, and deliver strategies to mitigate these
risks.


COMMUNICATION

Demonstrated oral & written communication skills with proven ability to communicate
complex issues to a broad range of audiences- BMCC employees, Directors,
Councilors, Customers, Veterinarians, Volunteers, other councils and the broader
community. Excellent customer service skills with demonstrated grievance
resolutions on sensitive issues. Preparing briefs and council reports for senior
management. Building effective relationships with other Animal Control Facilities,
the NSW Animal Welfare League, NSW RSPCA, & Sydney Dogs & Cats Home &
local veterinarians.

Liasing with council employees for developing marketing campaigns & community
engagement strategies, as well and revenue raising opportunities.


JUDGEMENT & PROBLEM SOLVING

Animal Shelter Coordinator will have demonstrated ability to meet the expectations
of customers and stakeholders in managing the facility. A high level of conflict
resolution & negotiation techniques on often volatile and sensitive topics. Strong
judgement & problem solving skills especially in the application of the NSW
Companion Animals Act.


AUTHORITY

This position has authority for workforce planning, managing & controlling
expenditures against budget, resource allocations, procurement & capitol expenditure
in their area of responsibility.

SKILL, EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS & BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES

QUALIFICATIONS & LICENSES

Relevant tertiary qualifications in animal care-related units or relevant
experience. (Diploma in Animal Care, Diploma Veterinary Nursing, Bachelor
of Veterinary Technology, Business related diplomas, or equivalent
experience of at least 5 years in a similar facility) •

Current driver’s licence

CRITERIA

Demonstrated competence in companion animal handling and animal
husbandry. •

Deep knowledge of animal care and welfare legislation/regulations including
but not limited to: the NSW Animal Companion Act, Companion Animal
Management Plan, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and ability to ensure
the Animal Shelter meets all legislative requirements. •

Ability in leading a team in delivering quality outcomes that meet business
needs. •

Ability to manage and coordinate activities at an animal shelter including but
not limited to: recruiting & managing staff, rostering, managing budgets,
cleaning, infection control, stock control and minimising waste. •

Ability to drive best outcomes in animal health & welfare. •
Ability to communicate with all areas of Council & all stakeholders to deliver

quality outcomes. •
Ability to deliver an exceptional customer experience and resolve conflict

where needed. •
Ability to manage the housing of animals, including maintaining connections

with other Animal Facilities to control and manage animal overflow. •
Demonstrated interest in achieving the best outcomes in animal health &

animal welfare.

DESIREABLE SKILLS


Previous experience in running an Animal Control Facility, or other animal

centre. •
Animal behavioural assessment qualification and/or experience. •
Previous Experience in Local Government setting. •
Microchipping implanting licence & experience. •
1st Aid skills for both human and animal.
