Job Description

About the Position:

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experience Land Tenure Officer to join the Shire of Broome team.

The land Tenure Officerwill be responsible for:

  • Coordinate all land tenure related matters, native title claims, negotiation and agreement of Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUA) and related corporate projects.
  • Provide advice and assistance to internal and external stakeholders in relation to land tenure, native title and Indigenous Land Use Agreement related matters.
  • Coordinate the Shire of Broome’s involvement in the Yawuru Park Council (YPC), YPC Working Group and the YPC Senior Officers Group.
  • Coordinate the Shire’s activities and obligations under the Yawuru Area Agreement Indigenous Land Use Agreement and the Yawuru Prescribed Body Corporate Indigenous Land Use Agreement (Yawuru ILUAs).
  • Support and advise the Director Development Services and the Executive Management Group (EMG) in relation to reserve management and Yawuru Conservation Estate matters.

This is a Full-time fixed term position to cover Maternity leave from 28 June 2024to 28 July 2025.

About You:

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Ability to interpret and apply legislative requirements (in the Federal, State and Local government environment).
  • Understanding of the statutory environment and relevant legislation, including:
    • Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 (WA)
    • Land Administration Act 1996 (WA)
    • Conservation and Land Management Act 1984 (WA) (Conservation Commission)
    • Native Title Act 1993 (Cth)
    • Local Government Act 1995 (WA)
  • Demonstrated understanding of Native Title Determinations and Indigenous Land Use Agreements.
  • Sound diplomacy skills in dealing with government agencies, traditional owners, consultants, staff and community members.
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills, including effective negotiation and mediation skills.
  • C Class Drivers License.
