Southern Mallee District Council is a diverse municipality with rural and township-based communities and vast agricultural and horticultural enterprises. It is located 200 kilometres to the east of Adelaide and covers 5,700 km2. 

Southern Mallee is central to the greater Mallee Region and is located within the southeast of the administrative region of the Murraylands and Riverland. 

Lameroo and Pinnaroo are key Mallee towns and represent a key economic zone on the Mallee Highway between Adelaide and Sydney. The Ngarkat and Karte Conservation Parks feature as major landmarks in the Southern Mallee and protect significant natural assets including a diverse range of plants and wildlife.

Reporting to the Manager Corporate Services, the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Officer is responsible for ensuring Council’s compliance with WHS legislation, associated acts, regulations, codes of practice and Australian standards, to help mitigate risk.

Specific duties include:

  • Develop, implement and review Council’s action plans for Work, Health and Safety, Injury and Risk Management, resulting from audit recommendations.
  • Ensure all staff are aware and have access to Council’s WHS Policies.
  • Maintain and Review Council’s WHS, Risk Management systems, frameworks, policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate all requirements and reporting for WHS Committee meetings.
  • Maintain Council’s SkyTrust program, reporting and implementation of further applications.
  • Manage Contractor and Volunteer registers and the induction process.
  • Liaise with contractors and consultants to conduct workplace inspections, testing and training.
  • Work on, and delivery of ad hoc tasks and projects as required.

Experience in and/or an understanding of legislation relating to WHS & Risk management in a Local Government, or other community, or service delivery focussed setting would be ideal.

Excellent written and verbal communications skills, strong computer literacy and the ability to work as part of a close knit and collaborative team is essential.
